Statement from Darren Cormack, MAG CEO
“On behalf of MAG, I congratulate Sir Keir Starmer on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Alongside the many challenges he and the Government will face is the rise of armed violence globally. Around the world, there are more than 100 active armed conflicts, alongside many other situations of violence.
The UK has a strong record of taking action to tackle the humanitarian impacts of conflict. As one of the first states to sign both the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty and the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions, this long-standing support has helped protect millions of people from the daily risk of explosive weapons.
This new Government has been elected on a manifesto that commits to uphold international law and prioritise the prevention of conflict.
We look forward to working with the Prime Minister and his colleagues to meet these commitments and support people affected by conflict and armed violence worldwide.”
