For the second time in a week, MAG has safely removed a large bomb in Quang Binh province, highlighting the ongoing threat of unexploded bombs in Vietnam – despite the war having ended 50 years ago.

A local fisherman discovered the bomb along the coastline, just 250 metres from homes in Thanh Xuan Village, Bo Trach District.

The Provincial Military Command quickly requested MAG’s support, and our explosive ordnance disposal team arrived on-site.

The team identified the device as an MK82 bomb, weighing approximately 230kg, with a blast radius of over 1km.

Following standard procedures, the team rendered the bomb safe and transported it to a designated demolition site for future disposal.

This operation comes just days after MAG safely removed a 118kg bomb embedded beneath a bridge.

Five decades after the war, these deadly devices continue to threaten communities, putting lives at risk as people farm, fish, and rebuild.

In Thanh Trach Commune alone, MAG has responded to 24 community-reported cases, removing 35 explosive devices.

Since beginning operations in Vietnam in 1999, MAG has responded to over 19,000 emergency callouts in Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Quang Nam, disposing of more than 119,400 explosive items.

Across Vietnam, we have helped remove over 390,000 explosive devices, contributing to a safer environment for local communities.
